Checking your writing

2 min read · #catalogue · #website · #marketing · #chat · #email

Where you find it

  • Descriptions. On the edit page of a product, family, department, collection or webpage, under each description box. Shops that follow the master show it under your shop's text, not under the master's English.
  • Emails in Chat. The spell-check icon next to Polish, among the formatting buttons of an email conversation's reply box in Customer Inbox and of the Email customer and New email windows. The suggestions open in a small window, and a number on the icon shows how many are left.
  • Newsletters and emails built in aiku. In the email editor, open the Writing tab on the right and click Check writing. It reads every heading, text, list and button of the email at once and says which block each suggestion belongs to.

It is a button on purpose: the check only runs when you ask for it, never on its own while you type or when you save.

What it looks for

  • Stock phrases. Lines like "elevate your experience" or "in today's fast-paced world", in any language.
  • Overselling. Piled up adjectives and superlatives that tell the reader nothing.
  • Artificial structure and repetition. "Not only... but also", the same idea twice, every sentence built the same way.
  • Filler. Introductions and closing lines that say nothing.
  • Not specific. General wording where a size, a material, a scent or a use would help.
  • Sounds translated. Wording that is correct but no one would say it that way in that language.
  • Check this claim. A promise or product feature the text gives no basis for. Check it before you publish.
  • Placeholder. Leftovers like [insert name], XXX or lorem ipsum.

Merge fields in emails, such as {contact_name}, are filled in when the email is sent, so the check leaves them alone.

Using the suggestions

Each suggestion shows the words at fault crossed out, the rewrite under them and the reason in your own language. In a description or email box the words are also underlined in the text. Accept swaps the words for the rewrite, keeping the formatting around them. Ignore removes the suggestion from the list. You can still change the text by hand afterwards, and you save or send as usual.

Rewrites stay in the language of the text. They keep the facts, numbers and names, but read them anyway: it is a suggestion, not a correction.

If you change the text after the check, a suggestion may no longer fit. Accepting it then shows a message instead of changing the wrong words. Click Check writing again to get a fresh list.

What it is not

It does not tell you whether a text was written by AI, and it is not a spelling checker. Good text gets few suggestions or none: Nothing to improve means the check found nothing worth changing.
