Getting notifications on your computer and phone

What you can be notified about

The Notify me when grid lists the moments worth interrupting you for:

  • My ticket is resolved - an engineer has finished the ticket you raised.
  • New comment on my ticket - someone wrote on your ticket.
  • Someone @mentions me on a ticket - a colleague typed your username or nickname after an @.
  • My ticket needs more information from me - an engineer asked you a question, and the ticket is cancelled if nobody answers in time.

For each one, tick the channels you want. Leave a row empty and that notification only appears inside aiku. Click Save when you are done.

The three channels

  • Email - sent to the email address at the top of the same page. Greyed out until you add one.
  • Slack - a direct message from the aiku bot. Greyed out until you add your Slack member ID (in Slack, open your profile → ⋮ → Copy member ID).
  • Browser - a notification from your computer's or phone's own notification system. Clicking it opens the ticket.

Switching on browser notifications

Browser notifications belong to a device, not to your account, so you switch them on once on each computer and phone:

  1. Open aiku on that device and go to Edit profile → Notifications.
  2. Click Enable browser notifications on this device.
  3. Your browser asks whether aiku may show notifications. Click Allow.
  4. The button changes to Browser notifications are on for this device.
  5. Tick Browser on the rows you want, then Save.

If you switch devices later, repeat the steps on the new one. Every device you enable gets the notification.

On an iPhone or iPad

Apple only allows web notifications from apps on your home screen:

  1. Open aiku in Safari.
  2. Tap Share → Add to Home Screen.
  3. Open aiku from the new home-screen icon, not from Safari.
  4. Follow the steps above.

On Android

Chrome on Android works like a computer: open aiku, enable, and allow.

When nothing pops up

Work down this list:

  • The browser blocked aiku. If the Browser column is greyed out, or the address bar shows Notifications blocked, click that icon (or the settings icon to the left of the address), set Notifications to Allow, and reload the page.
  • Your computer is blocking the browser. This is the most common reason, and the browser itself cannot tell you.
    • On a Mac: open System Settings → Notifications and scroll down the list of apps. Chrome is listed as Google Chrome, under G, not under C. Searching for "Chrome" in the settings search box does not find it. Click it, turn on Allow notifications, and set the style to Banners or Alerts. If Google Chrome appears twice, turn on both.
    • On Windows: open Settings → System → Notifications and turn on notifications for Google Chrome (or your browser).
  • Focus or Do Not Disturb is on. Notifications arrive silently in the notification centre until you turn it off.
  • Browser is not ticked on that row, or you did not click Save.
  • On iPhone, you opened aiku from Safari instead of the home-screen icon.

Switching them off

  • Stop one kind of notification: untick Browser on that row and Save.
  • Stop them on one device: open the page on that device and click Turn off. Your other devices keep receiving them.
  • A device you no longer have: nothing to do. Once its browser stops accepting notifications, aiku forgets it after the next attempt.
